The 28th UBE Biennale - Artist in Residence Program

Announcement of selected Artists

The most excellent plans and excellent plans for 3 programs were selected at the screening on 27th June. The artists who presented the most excellent plans will launch the projects in each area.

*The plans are subject to change according to the conditions.
*Details of each project, related events and schedule will be announced on website.

*Total: 48 entries from 14 countries including Japan.

1. Kids' Biennale

The Most Excellent Plan: PARTICIPATORY TEXTILE

Requirements of Programs

1. Kids' Biennale

Collaborate with local elementary school children at a city workshop during the summer to create works for display in the gallery exhibition room. This program is for those who enjoy communicating with children and fostering their creativity.

Period of Residence30 - 60 days between August 1, 2018 and November 9, 2018 * Reveal Event: From October to November, 2018

Art Gallery in Tokiwa Lake Hall (Tokiwa Park)

Accommodation and Production Costs
In exchange for the production in residence, presentation of produced works, and exchanges with local residents, the City provides accommodation, covers travel expenses, and supports production as follows:

- Production Cost - The maximum amount of commission pertaining to the production (including costs for materials, shipment, production, removal, and manpower) shall be 400,000 yen.
- Living Expenses - The City will provide the actual amount of travel cost for two round trips pertaining to the residence and accommodation fee. (200,000 yen at the maximum)
- Others - Ube City will separately cover costs required to organize workshops and events targeting children.

2. Inner City Project

Leverage empty shops and other underused facilities in central Ube to undertake diverse creative pursuits and engage with the townspeople. Pursue wide-ranging activities in conventional, media, performance, socially engaged, interdisciplinary, and other art genres.

Period of Residence
30 - 60 days between October 1, 2018 and November 30, 2018 * Reveal Event: From October to November, 2018

Place of Residence
A vacant shop in the shopping street of Ube City's central commercial area. Specific location will be determined through consultations.

Accommodation and Production Costs
In exchange for the production in residence, presentation of produced works, and exchanges with local residents, the City provides accommodation, covers travel expenses, and supports production as follows:

- Production Cost - The maximum amount of commission pertaining to the production (including costs for materials, shipment, production, removal, and manpower) shall be 400,000 yen.
- Living Expenses - The City will provide the actual amount of travel cost for one round trips pertaining to the residence and accommodation fee. (200,000 yen at the maximum)
- Others - Ube City will separately cover costs required to organize workshops and events targeting citizens.

3. Outdoor Installations and Workshops

Stay in the mountainous north of Ube City, putting together a lasting artistic plan and cultivating interpersonal communication. Also propose ways to encourage the artistic involvement of local residents, notably through workshops and collaborative productions.

Period of Residence
30 - 60 days between August 17, 2018 and November 9, 2018
* Reveal Event: From October to November, 2018

Place of Residence
Northern area of Ube City Specific location will be determined through consultations.

Accommodation and Production Costs
In exchange for the production in residence, presentation of produced works, and exchanges with local residents, the City provides accommodation, covers travel expenses, and supports production as follows:

- Production Cost - The maximum amount of commission pertaining to the production (including costs for materials, shipment, production, and manpower) shall be 3,500,000 yen. *Work will be installed into the Northern Area as a collection of Ube city.
- Living Expenses - The City will provide the actual amount of travel cost for three round trips pertaining to the residence. (150,000 yen at the maximum) and accommodations for free.
- Others - Ube City will separately cover costs required to organize workshops and events targeting citizens.
*Driver's license holders only.

The followings are common terms for program 1, 2, 3.

Eligibility

The applicant must:
A) Be an individual or a group engaged in cultural and art activities.
B) Be capable of communicating in Japanese or English.
C) Be capable of residing in Ube City for at least 30 days during the designated period.
D) Actively take part in community exchange programs the City plans during the residence.
E) Conduct the production and presentation of the produced works responsibly.
F) For program 3, it is necessary to have a driver's license.

Please send an Application Form with presentation sheets of your work (up to three A3 sheets; free style) by post or an e-mail attachment. Please download the Application Form from our website. * We do not return the submitted documents.

Submission by Post

Please make sure to enclose the presentation sheets saved in a CD-R with JPEG or PDF format. *If you do not receive the confirmation e-mail after 5 days, please call us.

Submission by Email

Please make sure to keep the file size of the attachment below 10MB. We cannot receive e-mail attachments exceeding 10MB. We recommend using a file transfer service. *If you do not receive a confirmation e-mail after 3days, please call us.

Submission Deadline

Submission must arrive no later than Wednesday, June 20, 2018

Selection and Announcement

The announcement will be in late June 2018.

*The Winners will be notified and the names of the winners will be published on the UBE Biennale website. We will notify the winners in writing.

Notes

A) Costs for preparing and submitting forms, etc. shall be the applicant's responsibility.
B) Personal information entered in the Application Form will not be used other than for the purpose of receipt, selection, and communication. However, at the time of announcing the selected Artists in Residence, however, the City will publish the name, city/ town, and age of the artists.
C) The presentation sheet(s) of the works may be published on the Ube City website, etc.
D) The copyright of the works of Program 1 and 2 belong to the artists. The rights to use the images and movies for the purpose of record, promotion, and advertisement, as well as the rights to produce and sell derivative works using the original works shall belong to the artist and the City.
A) The copyright of the work of Program 3 (including all the rights prescribed in Article 27 and Article 28 of the Copyright Act (Law No. 48 of 19709)) shall be relocated from the artist to Ube city.
E) The rights to use the images and movies for the purpose of record, promotion, and advertisement, as well as the rights to produce and sell derivative works using the original works, also shall belong to the City.
F) While the City exercises utmost caution at displaying the works, it shall not be held responsible for damage, etc. due to an act of God or theft.
G) The City does not cover the cost for insurance, etc. The artist shall be responsible for purchasing health, accident, and damage insurance at his/her own cost.
H) The artist must submit a report of residence at the end of his/her residency.
