The 28th UBE Biennale - Commissioned Art Program - Open Call

Requirements of Program

For the inaugural Commissioned Art program, entrants will submit ideas for outdoor sculptures that would be suitable for the Yamaguchi Prefectural Ube High School, which is commemorating its centennial. The ideas would reflect the school's historical backdrop and environs and instill pride among the students.

Eligibility

A) The competition is open to all individuals and groups, and amateurs and professionals.
B) Be able to design, produce and install the works independently by the designated date.

Work Specifications

A) Entries must be original works, which have not been exhibited to the public elsewhere.
B) The sculpture should take into consideration the safety of the viewers. The materials and the structure must be suitable for an outdoor environment, be able to withstand wind pressure and earthquakes and be safe to touch. Works that need frequent repairs or maintenance are not desirable.
C) The work should not infringe upon the rights of third parties.
D) Political, religious, for-profit imagery and offensive content is prohibited.

How to apply

1. Entry

Please send the Entry Sheet by e-mail attachment by Friday, July 20, 2018. We will provide application form and information about the installation location.
*Please download the Entry Sheet from our website.
*A guided school visit will be held at the beginning of August
*If you do not receive the confirmation e-mail after 3days, please call us.

2. Application

Please send the Application Form and presentation sheets of your work (up to three A3 sheets; free style) by post or an e-mail attachment.
* We do not return the submitted documents.

Submissions must arrive no later than Friday, August 31, 2018

Please make sure to enclose the presentation sheets saved in a CD-R with a JPEG or PDF format.

Please make sure to keep the file size of the attachment below 10MB. We cannot receive e-mail attachments exceeding 10MB. We recommend using a file transfer service.

Selection and Announcement

Award Ceremony

The announcement of Ube High School 100th Anniversary of Establishment - "KATABAMI" Alumni Union Prize and Award Ceremony will be held on the following date.

Date Saturday, September 28, 2019 Venue To be announced (Ube city) *It will be held with the award ceremony of the 28th UBE Biennale.

Schedule

1. Entry Deadline (Friday, July 20, 2018)
2. Application Deadline (Friday, August 31, 2018)
3. Selection and Announcement (Monday, October 1, 2018)
4. Consultation with Artist, Ube City and relevant persons (From November, 2018)
5. Consignment Contract (In the late of April, 2019)
6. Foundation Construction (July, 2019)
7. Installation of Sculpture (Early August, 2019)  
8. Award Ceremony (Saturday, September 28, 2019)

Note

A) Costs for preparing and submitting forms, etc. shall be the applicant's responsibility.
B) The secretariat will use personal information for internal purpose only. The secretariat may announce the name, country or city of residence, and the age of the winner.
C) The presentation sheet(s) of the works may be published on the Ube City website, etc.
D) Even if we decide to adopt your work, we are entitled to cancel the adoption if it is discovered that your work is the same as or closely resembles another work already published, or it is discovered that your work infringes a third party's right. Also, in the event that any problem such as infringement of rights arises, the responsibility and solution shall be attributable to the applicant, and in an event that Ube City and Yamaguchi Prefectural Ube High School suffers damage, the applicant will be required to compensate said damage.
E) The copyright of the work (including all the rights prescribed in Article 27 and Article 28 of the Copyright Act (Law No. 48 of 1970)) shall be relocated from the artist to Yamaguchi Prefectural Ube High School.
F) Any matters unspecified in above rules will be discussed, when necessary, and determined by Ube city and Ube Senior High School.
